U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, of Florida’s 13th Congressional District, said that Senate Majority Leader John Thune is not advancing the SAVE America Act despite Republican control of the chamber.
Luna made her statement in a post on X during ongoing Senate consideration of the bill, which passed the House earlier this year and would require documentary proof of United States citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and photo identification at the polls.
The SAVE America Act would require states to verify voter citizenship using federal databases before registering individuals for federal elections and mandate photo identification for voting. Recent polling shows 71% of Americans support the legislation, including 69% of independents. The bill addresses gaps in current registration processes that allow non-citizens to appear on voter rolls in some jurisdictions, according to a White House release.
“At this point, Senator Thune is hiding behind Democrats to block SAVE America Act,” Luna said on X. “At the end of the day, he won’t be able to blame Democrats for his failure to get this passed. He is fully capable of making it happen now, yet he still refuses. It’s getting old.”
As Senate Majority Leader, Thune sets the chamber’s legislative schedule and decides when to file cloture motions to end debate. According to information from his official website, he brought the SAVE America Act to the Senate floor in March 2026 for extended debate, but has not moved it to a final vote or pursued procedural steps to advance the measure over opposition.
The SAVE America Act passed the House on a party-line vote in February 2026, but has not received a final Senate vote, despite Republican control of the chamber, as reported by The Hill.
Luna serves her second term representing Florida’s 13th Congressional District and is a United States Air Force veteran who previously served in the Oregon Air National Guard. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of West Florida and became the first Mexican-American woman elected to Congress from Florida. Luna chairs the Task Force on the Declassification of Federal Secrets, according to her official biography.
