PINELLAS COUNTY – Traditionally the first Friday in February is celebrated as School Crossing Guard Appreciation Day.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will hold a ceremony at the Sheriff’s Administration Building, located at 10750 Ulmerton Road in Largo on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. School crossing guards’ service and dedication will be honored during the ceremony. To show our appreciation, Length of Service and Perfect Attendance certificates will be presented to our members.

The Sheriff’s Office will recognize the members of our School Crossing Guard Program for their dedication, professionalism, and tireless efforts in keeping our children safe.

A total of 45 members will be honored with the following:

•    Length of Service Certificates (18): eleven 5-year certificates, four 10-year certificates, one 15-year certificate, and two 20-year certificates.

•    Perfect Attendance (29)

Since 1972, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office School Guards have been assisting children crossing intersections on their way to and from school. Originally a volunteer program, throughout the years it has grown to meet and adhere to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) standards. Currently, the team consists of 110 crossing guards who provide service to the 192 school crossing posts in the unincorporated areas as well as the contract cities of: Dunedin, Safety Harbor, Oldsmar, Seminole, St. Pete Beach, and Madeira Beach.

Crossing Guards attend a mandatory eight-hour training session, which includes classroom and field training when they are hired at the Sheriff’s Office. Returning guards attend a mandatory four-hour training, which is followed by continuous field training throughout the year.

Thank you to all of our amazing school crossing guards!
