Have you ever walked down a sidewalk and stepped onto a mat with bumps? The bumps are called truncated domes. They alert visually impaired pedestrians to changes in the right-of-way and that they may be entering or crossing into a potentially hazardous area, such as going from a sidewalk to a roadway. Truncated domes originated in Japan when an inventor saw a need because of a friend who was losing his eyesight. The safety enhancement was implemented in the United States in 1991 with the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. #MoveSafePinellas #TransportationTuesday
