The Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Florida will be the next home of the Latin American Research Review (LARR) and Professor Carmen Martínez Novo will be its next Editor in Chief. The Latin American Research Review (LARR) publishes original research and review essays on Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latina/Latino studies. LARR covers the social sciences and the humanities, including the fields of anthropology, economics, history, literature and cultural studies, political science, and sociology. The journal reviews and publishes papers in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. All papers, except for book and documentary film review essays, are subject to double-blind peer review. LARR, the academic journal of the Latin American Studies Association, has been in continuous publication since 1965.
Job description:
The GA/EA is expected to help the Editor in Chief with journal matters such as managing submissions, being a liaison with authors, associate editors and reviewers, helping draft correspondence and managing processes in the online publishing system.
This Editorial Assistantship is a 12-month .5 FTE (20 hours a week) appointment. The Assistantship includes a stipend appropriate for a Ph.D. student (between 24,000 and 26,600 depending on experience), fringes, and a tuition waiver for three terms a year (fall, spring and summer). Ideally, the GA should plan to work for the journal for two or more years.
The job will provide the graduate assistant with experience in the world of academic publishing, a valuable skill in today’s tight job market. The journal has an experienced publications specialist provided by the Latin American Studies Association, so copyediting and other editorial/production tasks will not be the responsibility of the GA.
Criteria:
The successful candidate should have been admitted to a graduate degree program at the University of Florida, have a strong commitment to interdisciplinary approaches to Latin American Studies, and should preferably be a Ph.D. student enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Latin American Studies at the CLAS. If the student is not currently enrolled, enrollment will be strongly encouraged at the time of appointment.
We are looking for a candidate with a stellar academic record, organized, with attention to detail, great interpersonal skills, willing to learn the technical aspects of editorial and publication processes, and bilingual in English and Spanish or English and Portuguese. Candidates from minoritized and underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
